branding backwards / 06

For this week’s branding backwards post, I was inspired by Satsuki Shibuya’s studio tour on Emmadime last week. I’ve always loved her shop’s aesthetic and thought it would be a perfect post for our series. She has a sweet + elegant brand filled with many patterns throughout her products … you can bet there’s always something interesting going on!

Don’t forget to check out which brand Cassie picked over on my blog today!!

Recent Work: Blog Design for Marketa Krivy

Since returning from my lovely trip to the Dominican Republic I’ve been working with graphic designer (Toronto, Canada), Marketa Krivy to help her start up a design blog. I was flattered when she asked for my help because she enjoys the simplicity of my design style. Over the past few weeks we’ve established a mood board that I could use as a guide while designing her blog. Once we nailed down a look to move forward with, I provided Marketa with a blog layout that we tweaked over time and the lovely Breanna Rose coding this baby!. I had a really great time working with Marketa. Her love for clean lines and bright colors were a real treat to explore.  I’d really appreciate it if you could stop by her new blog design and give this new blogger some designer love!

Micheal Graydon's Weekends

The photography work of Micheal Graydon keeps popping up everywhere and catching my eye every time. His work with Kinfolk and Herriot Grace are among my favorites, but his entire portfolio is just as juicy. These images were filled under the category “Weekend” and give me a really cozy feeling. Take a look at the rest of his portfolio!

Hey guys, Sorry for the lack in posting this week. I’ve been down and out with Mono and let me tell you, this illness is a curse for impatient people. OMG. I’m hoping to start feeling better soon and to be back to posting regularly. Until then, here’s some links I’ve collected.

1. Have you guys seen The Voracity by Anna Williams? Such a great collection of photographic themes.

2. I recently made Red Wine Sangria for a friends house warming party and it was delish. Here’s the recipe I used.

3. Have you ever wondered how to access the fancy font variants you see in script fonts? Here’s how!

4.  This article by Margarita Tartakovsy is really great. You’ll see some creative faces you may know being featured.

5. I think this print might be added to my personal collection soon. The color and illustration is just perfect.

6. These snug geometric magnets are awesome.

7. Curious about what plants you should put on your patio to keep the bugs away. One Kings Lane has the answer.

8. I really really love this video featured by the Selby. Such a great way to live a creative life.

Lesson Learn-ing: Communication Through Email

Sometimes, communicating with your client is the best way to share information due to busy schedules and comfort levels. Email communication doesn’t come without it’s barriers and there is almost always a loss in translation along the way. I actually prefer to communicate through email because it’s most convenient to my current schedule and also provides me with written documentation of the design process/feedback. Over time, I’ve found some strategies to minimize the “lost in translation” effect, but I’d love to hear your techniques.

Mine are as follows:
• Use only one email chain per client. Tell your clients that this is how you prefer to stay organized and ask them to always respond in the same thread.
• When gathering feedback, ask your clients to use bulleted lists. I then use those lists as a guide, checking things off as they are completed
• Something I’m going to try soon — removing/minimizing my email signature from the bottom of my email so that the email chains aren’t excessively long.
• Avoid emailing quick little notes. Try to gather your thoughts and email one concise email, less often.
• Figure out a filing system to use within your email service. I use Gmail, and there are lots of color coding/folder options that keep me organized

What are your tips??

We Are Helsinki

We Are Helsinki is a free (bi-monthly) publication distributed in the city. With this redesign of the magazine, the content also grew to include more design and photography sections. I really enjoy the layout of the magazine and or course…the typography choice on the cover.

The Voracity by Anna Williams

The Voracity is a personal project by photographer Anna Williams. With this project she hopes to explore hunger, consumption, and beauty and then display her findings in beautiful little online zines. I stumbled across the project when I saw THIS image in the latest summer issue of Sweet Paul.

Good stuff Anna & Paul. Good stuff!
